So, what would you have done?

Setting and influencing the dice roll is just part of the picture. To beat the dice you have to know how to bet the dice. Whether you call it a "system," a "strategy," or just a way to play - this is the place to discuss it.

So, what would you have done?

Hey guys. I've been going along shooting quite nicely the past couple of weekends - UNTIL TODAY :o

At one of my favorite places to play today I swear I couldn't roll more than 2-3 times the first half dozen times I had the dice in my hands. I prefer the crapless table at this casino - my dice just seem to be better behaved or I hit the "sweet spot" more regularly. I couldn't find that spot today on the other table for sure. Now, the only reason I stayed was after setting the 4 as the point x2 and coming pretty much right back on a 7, I started laying that puppy. Mostly it was just me shooting so I was looking at it as a learning experience, and I lost a little bit of $ because I eventually just went to a doey-don't for testing purposes. The couple of other guys bold enough to try out the table came up with similar results so it's not like I was the only one throwing the 7s but still - criminy! I started to leave a couple of times but there was a guy on the table that kept asking me to stay - obviously a dark sider and I had him back to even from his own dark side shooting so he wanted to make just a little bit. And my dice did switch back the other way eventually. BTW - it was a grip issue because if the 7s weren't double-pitches they were one die off axis - except for the 5/2 I threw using Irish's set (which meant a single pitch). The shooting really wasn't that bad it just seemed like I was REALLY attracting the 7 today for some reason.

Normally I would have just left the table (I agree with the "lose 3 and flee" strategy!) but since I was managing not to lose very much anyway I just powered thru it til I started seeing some numbers coming again. And actually I was having fun. Mostly just me, the dealers and the one other guy that wanted me to throw 7s anyway.

Anyway - it definitely does seem that I was negatively influencing the dice with my x6 and really bringing the 7s (I think all were 6/1 or 3/4, so double pitch or one die off axis). I consider it a good sign that I could diagnose it actually but all the work I've been doing on my practice table lately to get my 1,000 roll book has really helped me with telling what my shots are specifically doing, and that's a pretty important piece to have in my arsenal. And if this is a periodic trend it'll be a good thing anyway with my partner play since my partner just wants to lay the 4 and 10 basically and doesn't have much interest in any other bets on the table.

Anyway - just curious if you guys would have just packed it in (and normally I would have done just that), if you would have tried to tweak your set, or what. I think it was Maddog who told me once that tweaking your shot is a sign of frustration and you should just quit at that point anyway, and it sounds like good advice to me, but I was just wondering what others would have done in my place.

After three bad hands in a row I woulda walked. What I've started doing is actually qualifying myself before I start throwing out large place bets on meeee. I'd like to see a couple of box numbers and the dice landing nicely before I risk any real money.

If I have a couple of bad hands from one position I'll either change positions or change tables entirely. OR I'll just pass the dice and look for trend opportunities. OR I'll just stand there and wait for something to happen while I'm charting the roulette game at the end of the pit, looking to pick up on a signature there. OR I'll just order another Jack and Coke, then go look for opportunities in the high limit slots. Or . . . man, I could go on like this forever.

tabletop123 - could we convince you to get your computer off caps lock? In Internet parlance - you're "shouting" at us. Thanks.

Thanks guys for the input. I think most who've played craps with me know I am a pretty disciplined person (not perfect of course!). I was just more or less experimenting with this and most of the time there was just me and my other dark sider at the table anyway - it was so bad. So, I took the opportunity to work with a couple of other ideas for not much loss. Using the doey-don't I broke even because I threw a couple of 12s but not on the come-out. Had there been more people on the table so I was waiting longer to shoot I would have gone bye-bye probably after my second hand but I so rarely get a chance to throw one after the other I took advantage of it. I do need to work a little with my dark side play too so I was working a couple of different practice angles here. To be quite honest it was actually kind of fun for a change but still worth-while as far as I'm concerned. Anything that can be a "learning" experience is good for me as long as it doesn't cost me my bankroll!

Thanks again guys.

Tabletop - by all means hook up with Howard. He's one of the best. As for me doing classes on the east coast - it's been a long time. I'm comfortable doing classes in Vegas, Tunica, and Biloxi because my friends at Crescent Dealer Schools have locations in all three places and we're used to doing business with each other. These days there aren't a lot of dealer schools available - most casinos are training their dealers in house. There is a school in Atlantic City I've rented before, and Howard and I have been talking about doing a class up there next year. This whole thing is a hobby business and a labor of love for me - it's not a charity. Dealer school rental and travel costs to Atlantic Cit are about double what they are everywhere else, and I operate this thing on a fairly thin margin. When doing seminars out of my primary market I have to be sure we have a significant commitment from players who plan to attend before I pull the trigger on it. I don't know of any place between Orlando and Atlantic City where I could do a seminar - especially if you're talking about one-casino-markets. I'm always open to suggestions, though.
