why is it so hard..................

Setting and influencing the dice roll is just part of the picture. To beat the dice you have to know how to bet the dice. Whether you call it a "system," a "strategy," or just a way to play - this is the place to discuss it.

why is it so hard to say........"TAKE ME DOWN"

just saying.......especially when your place bets are paid for already. Ya i know a lot of people are going for the long roll, and if your bets are paid for, why not shoot for the moon. At the same time, why not say "TAKE ME DOWN" and not be greedy and smile as you collect your winnings and wait with a smirk on your face when everyones chips get raked in when the 7 rolls, which usually seems to happen. Of course you'll be smirking for a long time every once in a while when you stand there and miss the hot shoot. but what happens more? super long rolls or short to mediocre? i just find it super hard to say those three words and it's bugging me.... why? haha thanks for your time :D

MP wrote a great piece once on this very subject. The gist of it is this: Most always it's better to listen to that little guy in your head. Don't turn em off but put them in the rack.

Maybe he'll be so kind as to link the article from TDI a few years back.

I've been watching a few pretty clever (IMHO) regular players conforming their basic strategy so that they take down everything they can after 4 or 5 rolls to fairly good results. Granted, the majority are fleas grinding it out for just a small, daily profit. Myself, I've always maintained that you keep pressing, logically, and fire the houses' money right back at them. The answer lies somewhere in the middle. To answer to the initial question, I think that since craps is a fairly social game, that nobody wants to look like they're "bitching out" on the rest of the players, to some extent. Oh yeah, and greed...lol!

As long as all of the other players are willing to cover my random-bet losses, if I stay with the herd and be all social; then I'm fine with that. 8-)

Of course, the problem is that they won't...so the price of "being social" ends up costing you BIG TIME...but at least you can feel like you lost as a group instead of having won as an individual.

I think if I had a casino close enough to go to any time I wanted then I could probably say "take me down".

Unfortunately, I have to travel quite far to get to a casino and only go about three times per year. Once those bets are paid for on the table then I can have fun without the worry and enjoy my trip. Not saying this is smart play but just some of the psychological tricks our minds play on us. Just my two cents!

In truth, when you're first getting into a hand you should always be asking yourself "What move can I make right now that will guarantee me a profit. If you have $12 each on the six and eight and get paid $14 when one of them rolls - regressing to $6 each guarantees you a $2 profit for that hand. $66 inside for one hit pays $21. Regress to $22 inside or $12 each six and eight and you'll only have $1 - $3 at risk on the next toss. If you bet more than the table minimum there's almost always a move you can make after one hit that will guarantee your profit for that shooter or minimize exposure. Never press until all of your action is paid for - and the quickest way to get it paid for is with a regression. Now, with that said, "take me down" is the ultimate regression. Certainly nothing wrong with that.

There's some GREAT advice above.

After playing this game for 25-30 years now, and for about the past 15-20 years, I can FINALLY mutter the words "Turn-My-Bets Off-Please", and/or "Take-Me-Down-Please", without any self-inflicted mental issues.
Sure, it took a while, but I'm there now. Lord knows how much $ it's cost me (and how much $ it has saved me) though! Hahahahahaha...

And yes, I AM a New Yawker. However I am also a Gentleman, so I always say "Please", and I also say "Thank-You" to the Stick when they pass the dice back to me. :D  :D

I'm a big fan of ISRs.

Why is it so hard ........ that's what she said!

We all get caught up in the moment, but like anything it takes practice. Once you get use to saying turn me off, and not feel any regret when the shooter continues to hit numbers, it'll be easier the next time. Myself, I look for reasons to turn my bets off and I'll keep them off until the shooter makes the point, where I will have the dealer remove the "off" button when the puck is off. That way I don't have to say turn me on when the puck is on, which I find is usually unlucky for me.

Why? Hope. For me anyway that's it. I'd rather hope for the next roll to be good than to take the guaranteed "win" of pulling it all down. Now that I've seen a few long hands, I'm always in "hope" of the next one. There is only one thing that consistently makes me say "take them down" - that's my GF, L. When L whispers behind me "Think maybe you should take something down now?" it's like the clear voice of reason that breaks through. Well, sometimes it breaks through anyway. ;) Interestingly, I'm also a better voice for "take them down" or regress when she's shooting and I'm watching. Even though it's all "our" money it seems the shooter is always more hopeful and the watcher is always more anxious to lock up the win so far.

One of the slides from the original Axis Power Craps seminar says "Hope is not a Strategy."

I still remember the first time - way back in the seventies - when my wife walked up behind me after playing slots for a few hours, looked over my shoulder and asked "how much money do you have on the table." I told her and she about crapped her pants. "Take some of that down and let's get out of here," she said. I did, and the next roll after I took my action down the seven showed. The little woman was right.

Sometimes, when you look out there and see you have pressed up to $500 each on the four and ten and you're going to win $1000 the next time one of those number shows - just remember you can win that $1000 now by taking that action down.

Its so hard to make money on RRs when I bet them, that I want all my money, what I happened to win and my bankroll. More short rolls than long ones. Shoulda, Woulda, Coulda, makes me nuts. When that happens, I always feel better if my money is in my pocket.

A normal packed table will hold 12 people. If you bet the 6/8 for $5 each, get one hit and OFF, you will win $7. The dice takes approximately 1 hour to go full circle thru 12 people. $7 X 12 = $96/hour. Sociability be damned. $96/hour ain't a bad profit. Given most people's small plays at live casinos, chances are you will never see these people again the rest of your life... so who really cares what they think. You are walking away a winner !

Gosh darn it Heavy,
How long have I known you and I never got that.....?
I have been chasing that magical 1k win, every since learning to press the 4/10.

Playing at the GN last year when Pappy was on one of his signature rolls, we got interrupted...(game stopper)
I went off for one roll.....Should have regressed.
Easy to say in retrospect and after reading this thread. I made a bunch of money on the hand....
With an ISR, I would have more than doubled it. I could not get away from the, 'Just one more hit on the 4 or 10', mind set.
