Archive Update

The Axis Power Craps Forum has been around in one form or another for over 10 years. Many of the posts from those years have been preserved in one form or another in our archives. This forum is a work in process while we work to preserve and re-post as many of those threads as possible. If you have saved any of your archival posts through the years feel free to share them here.

Archive Update

Post by heavy » Fri Sep 16, 2011 12:28 am

I've been diligently working behind the scenes, trying to recapture as much of the data base as I could from the old Crapsfest site - on which we'd stored many of the old posts from the original APC site. I had a bit of a break through tonight and managed to get 5520 pages (yeah, that's five THOUSAND) of posts retrieved from the old (corrupted) data base. Those posts now reside on my desktop in multiple forms (Word, Excel, SQL, and PDF). I'd like to figure out a way to upload the whole data file to the new APC forum, but I'm afraid that's going to be a problem because included in this import are many deleted posts from porn hawkers and viagra peddlers. In order to keep the folks at my IP provider happy I'd have to go through and manually delete each and every one of those posts, then . . . oh, hell, It's too complicated to even think about. If I just copy and paste these posts in text format a few pages a day I think I can accomplish what we're trying to do - while giving you guys an opportunity to chime in on any of those threads as I cut and paste them over. This is going to be a fairly long and drawn out process, but we'll sort through it. Just wanted to let you know what's happening on the data recovery front.

Later.

Okay, update II on the old forum data base I exported. It appears to me that I have all of the posts but in most cases I do not have the identification of the poster. Oh, if a post is signed by someone then it shows up - but it does not appear that the poster's ID is in the headers. I will probably post this stuff anyway - then we can have a little fun trying to figure out who said what.

Thanks for doing all the grunt work, I know there is some treasure in those Posts. I use to copy and paste Posts of interests and place them into Word, but all was lost when I went to my new Laptop and Window 7's.

The older you get well you know, now I have an external hard drive that I use to back up all of my files. Window's lets the user make or back up an image copy of your computer hopefully I will not have a need for this.

Just in case your are thinking about an external hard drive the cost was under $100 (newegg.com) for 1 terabyte of space. I am not sure what a terabyte is, but I know its more than I will ever use.
Keep them soft and straight!

Okay, I think I've figured the archive thing out. The good news - there are not 5000 plus pages of posts - just 5000 plus posts. The bad news (for readers) - is that I'm not going to go through every single post and decide what's worth keeping or not - then transferring it over. Instead I'm going to convert the entire file to a .pdf, upload that to the system and then provide a link within the archive sub-board that will take you to that file. From there - you can read it or download it to your computer and read it off line. I'll get that done in the next day or so.

Joe - I am well blessed with external hard drives. I have two of them - plus a second desktop that I have a lot of stuff backed up on - plus a laptop I keep a lot of duplicate files on . . . hell, I have a new computer I bought about six months ago that I haven't even taken out of the box yet. I am definitely computer poor.
