Big O is right. If the money is super important to you and it will put you in a much better position then it's a personal choice but its a bad insurance move.

I don't think its ever a good idea to bet the pass line if you can avoid it. Always better placing the # but I do both anyway.

I've often considered taking bets down, turning them off, etc. after 12 rolls or so. I go across with place bets and put bets then regress which takes me 4 individual hits to break even then I start pressing after the 6th roll.

I only play in Vegas and would never ever pay upfront. I think it's completely stupid. I bet 52k across and would owe I think 1500 upfront for 2,3,4,10,11,12 whether it hits or not. It's not possible to win doing that.
